In the 1970’s, the wholesale business began to erode as retailers started to order direct from manufacturers. As a result, in a shift of business focus, Philip W. Klaus Jr. started a chain of children’s clothing stores called Small People in Richmond, Virginia in 1979. In 1987, the company expanded into mail order with the mailing of the first Children’s Wear Digest catalog. Response to the first catalog was overwhelming, with orders fulfilled directly from CWDKids’ corporate offices by the entire staff. Due to the incredible increase in orders since 1987, order fulfillment was moved to our well-staffed warehouse in Martinsville, Virginia. This facility is able to process up to 5,000 orders per day that are received via phone, fax, mail and the internet.

In 1992, the company was sold to The Right Start, but Philip Klaus remained at the helm. Ownership was transferred back to the Klaus family in 1995 when Philip decided to buy the company back. Fourth generation, James Klaus came on board as President at that time. Today, CWDKids mails over 17 million catalogs a year. The staff at CWDKids has grown with the company, but the family atmosphere remains the same today as it was in 1987.
